If you have searched for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu near you, the name Gracie Barra probably came up. It is the largest jiu-jitsu team in the world, and plenty of people assume every school with "Gracie" on the sign is part of it. It isn't. The Gracie family produced several separate teaching branches, and each one trains a little differently. This guide explains how Gracie Barra is organized, how Rocian Gracie Jr. Jiu-Jitsu (the branch we teach at GMA in Gallatin, TN) is organized, and what those differences mean for you on an ordinary Tuesday night class.

One thing up front: this is not a ranking. Both are legitimate Gracie branches, and good jiu-jitsu gets taught under both names. The goal is to help you understand what you are walking into, whichever door you choose.

What Is Gracie Barra?

Gracie Barra was founded in 1986 in Barra da Tijuca, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and takes its name from that neighborhood. Its headquarters later moved to Southern California, and the organization grew into a worldwide network. By its own count it has more than 1,000 schools across six continents, which is why you can find a Gracie Barra school in most large cities.

The team's stated mission is "Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone," and its stated vision is a school in every community. That goal shapes almost everything about how a Gracie Barra school runs: the curriculum, the uniform, the instructor training and the way new schools open.

How Gracie Barra structures its curriculum

Gracie Barra teaches through tiered programs, each built on a 16-week cycle:

  • GB1, Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals: the beginner program, covering basic positions, escapes and self-defense.
  • GB2, Advanced Jiu-Jitsu: intermediate technique that builds on the fundamentals.
  • GB3, Expert Jiu-Jitsu: advanced training that includes no-gi and MMA-related work.
  • GBK: the kids program.

Because every school follows the same cycle, a student can move cities and expect a similar class in the new school. That consistency is one of the main selling points of a large network.

The Gracie Barra school model

Gracie Barra operates as a network of affiliated schools. It runs an instructor certification program and invites qualified instructors to open a Gracie Barra school under the team's standards. Students typically train in the official Gracie Barra uniform, a white or blue gi with the team's patches, and the team sells its own uniforms and apparel. The shared look is intentional: it signals that every school belongs to one team.

What Is Rocian Gracie Jr. Jiu-Jitsu?

Rocian Gracie Jr. Jiu-Jitsu is the teaching organization led by Master Rocian Gracie Jr., a 6th degree IBJJF black belt and a member of the Gracie family, based in São Paulo, Brazil. He opened his first academy there in 1998 and built the teaching system that carries his name, the Rocian Gracie Jr. Method. GMA is a branch academy of that organization, and every class on our mat follows his method.

Our connection to it is personal. Professor Konrado met Master Rocian in California in the early 1990s, when Rocian began teaching jiu-jitsu out of Professor Konrado's academy. The two trained together for years, and on December 12, 2000, Professor Konrado received his black belt directly from Master Rocian. It was the first black belt Rocian Gracie Jr. ever awarded. You can read the full story on our About page.

How the Rocian Gracie Jr. Method structures training

The method is strict about curriculum. Every coach on our mat teaches the same system, in the same order, to the same standard. Classes in Gallatin are taught by Professor Konrado, his sons and grandsons, and the coaches he has certified in the method.

The biggest philosophical point of the method is how it measures progress. It assesses a student on what they actually know, not on whether they compete. Two students can have the same understanding of the art, and only one of them may have the temperament or the body for tournaments. A system built only around competition leaves the second student behind. The Rocian Gracie Jr. Method measures knowledge, so both can progress honestly. Competition is encouraged here, and our fight team trains for IBJJF and local events, but it is never required for a promotion.

What Both Gracie Branches Have in Common

For all the structural differences, the art underneath is the same. Both branches teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu built on leverage, position before submission, and the idea that a smaller person with good technique can control a larger one. Both use the adult belt path of white, blue, purple, brown and black, with stripes along the way. Both expect you to tap early, train with control, and look after your partners. If you want the wider background on how the art developed, our sister site has an overview of the history of Gracie jiu-jitsu.

A white belt at either branch spends the first months learning the same core problems: how to survive under mount, how to hold guard, how to escape side control, and how to breathe when things get uncomfortable. The names of the programs differ. The early lessons mostly don't.

How to Choose the Right Jiu-Jitsu School for You

The branch name matters less than the room you train in. Whatever school you are considering, these are the questions worth asking:

  1. Who teaches the classes? Ask about the head instructor's rank, who promoted them, and who actually runs the beginner classes each week.
  2. Is there a clear curriculum? A good school can tell you what you will learn in your first months and how you will know you are progressing.
  3. How are promotions decided? Ask whether rank is based on knowledge, attendance, competition results, or a mix.
  4. Does the schedule fit your life? Two or three classes a week is the sweet spot for most beginners. Check our class schedule to see the times we run.
  5. How does the room feel? Watch how the higher belts treat new people. A safe, patient training culture is worth more than any logo.
  6. Can you try it first? Any school confident in its teaching should let you take a class before you sign anything.
